Diggers Hotline is Wisconsin's one-call center. Anyone in the state who is digging,
excavating or disturbing the soil is required by law to contact Diggers Hotline at
least three working days before beginning work.
As a homeowner you probably have the need to dig in the yard periodically to build
a new patio, install a fence, plant trees or shrubs or install an irrigation system.
Before you begin digging you should make contacting Diggers Hotline your number one
priority. This should be done three days prior to beginning your project.
Contacting Diggers Hotline is simple and available 24/7. You can call Diggers Hotline
at 811 or 800-242-8511. They also offer a Email-a-Locate option on their website.
After submitting your locate request with Diggers Hotline the underground lines in
the area you requested to be marked for your project will be marked by the utility
owners with colored paint and flags. The flags and colored paint marks will let you
to know approximately where the lines are buried and will help you to avoid hitting
them while digging. When possible, it is best to dig at least 18 inches away from
the marks. However, if it is necessary to dig closer, you then will need to proceed
carefully using only hand tools within 18 inches of either side of the marks.
